Heat applied to the surface of the skin enlarges underlying blood vessels that will relax tissues and can temporarily relieve painful symptoms. Using heat relieve tissues experiencing spasms or irritation promoting an increase in flexibility, range of motion, and circulation. Appropriate forms of heat include hot bath or shower, hot tub, and a heating pad. Heat should not be applied for more than 15 (fifteen) minutes at a time. Heat can be used incorrectly, so be sure to ask Dr. Berger when it is appropriate.
