Discs have a poor blood supply, so they receive nutrients from the circulation of fluids when there is movement of the spinal joints. Joint misalignments of the spine prevent this natural action and can cause disc thinning and degeneration. Intersegmental traction (roller table) is a way of inducing passive motion that will stretch spinal joints and increase mobility. The patient lies face up on the table that has rollers beneath the surface that slowly travel up and down the length of the spine.

The roller table has several possible adjustments depending on comfort. The height of the rollers can be raised or lowered to provide more or less pressure. A vibrating feature can also be activated so the rollers provide more of a massage effect. Most patients find this form of therapy to be very relaxing and ask if they can take it home.
